Tragic Death of Seaham Woman Due to Faulty Ottoman Bed
A 39-year-old woman from Seaham, County Durham, tragically died after becoming trapped by a broken ottoman bed and suffering positional asphyxia. According to a coroner’s report recently made public, Helen Davey, who ran a beauty salon out of her house, passed away on June 7.
Tragic Accident: Defective Gas-Lift Piston Claims Life
The accident occurred while Davey was bending over the storage section of her gas-lift ottoman bed, according to coroner Jeremy Chipperfield. Her neck was trapped against the bed’s frame when the mattress platform suddenly toppled. According to the report, the disastrous breakdown was caused by a malfunction in one of the two gas-lift pistons that were intended to help raise the bed.
A Daughter’s Heartbreaking Testimony
Elizabeth, Davey’s daughter, found her mother lying unconscious with her head beneath the bed. She described her frantic attempts to raise the heavy bed in order to save her mother in her tearful statement to the inquiry.
She appeared to be attempting to stand up since her legs were bowed. Elizabeth remarked, “I saw that her face was blue and that there was a noticeable indent on her neck from the frame.” Paramedics pronounced Helen dead at the site despite her efforts and attempts at CPR.
Urgent Safety Warning: Faulty Gas Pistons in Beds
In his findings, the coroner highlighted the dangers of defective gas piston mechanisms in these beds and cautioned that if nothing is done, similar events may happen again. He has called on the UK business secretary and other pertinent authorities to address these safety issues.
Heartfelt Tribute Ottoman Bed
It is noted that Helen Davey was a loving mother to her two children, George and Elizabeth. Elizabeth shared her sorrow on social media in a poignant remembrance, calling her mother her dearest friend and regretting the time they had spent together.

A request for further regulation and scrutiny in order to prevent future deaths has been sparked by this unfortunate event, which brings to light the possible risks connected to household furniture that uses gas-lift systems. Understanding the safety of these items is crucial as the community grieves the loss of a cherished mother and friend.
