WASHINGTON In an attempt to reverse his defeat in the 2020 presidential election, former President Donald Trump was once again charged, leading to the attack on the US Capitol building on January 6.

The same four counts that Trump was charged with in the initial indictment from last August are included in the superseding indictment that a federal grand jury returned on Tuesday:

conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to hinder an official proceeding, obstruction of and attempt to obstruct an official proceeding and conspiracy against rights.

After the Supreme Court's ruling on presidential immunity last month, a new indictment was returned.

It prohibited the use of specific "official acts" that Trump committed while serving as president in the prosecution of the case.

A fresh grand jury that had never heard testimony in this case was given the superseding indictment.

The filing on Tuesday was made by the office of special counsel Jack Smith. It stated that it "reflects the Government's efforts to respect and implement the Supreme Court's holdings and remand.

In a series of social media posts, Trump attacked the new indictment, calling it "shocking" and "a direct attack on democracy."
